Video: Classic rally cars versus Mediterranean mountains
Small islands with tight twisty roads and classic rear-wheel-drive rally cars are a fine match as proven by the Tour de Corse. For six days in early October the single track roads of the hilly bits of Corsica resounded to the noise of Porsche flat-sixes, Ford Pinto fours and even a wailing Wankel in a first-generation Mazda RX-7. Flared wheel arches, tail-happy corner exits and period liveries, including a Renault 5 GT Turbo in Elf colours and a Jagermesieter Porsche 911 were also much in evidence.
This video shows a bevy of bygone beauties being driven with bravado through a series of S-bends on a typically tight Corsican mountain road. As well as the aforementioned Renaults and practically a procession of Porsches are a goodly selection of Mk2 Escorts, a plenitude of Peugeots and a handful of rarer machinery including Opels and Talbots. A somewhat younger generation of rally cars was represented by the E30 BMW 3 Series, Lancia Delta Integrale in an eye-catching gold Motul paintjob and even a Ford Sierra Cosworth. Pride of place must go to a stunning Alpine A110, the manufacturer and car which were both being celebrated by the Tour de Corse this year.
